The Hamilton Spectator reported:
Hamilton scammed out of $800,000 by ‘impostor vendor’ fraudsters in last year.
“It’s a reality of cyberattacks now,” said Charles Brown, the city’s auditor general, in an interview after presenting a report to councillors that shows the city lost about $878,000 to “vendor impostor” scams in the last two years. “There is constant bombardment on so many fronts.”
Worse, the city was duped into changing the banking information of a vendor to an account controlled by a fraudster even though the legitimate vendor emailed to warn the city a week earlier that it had experienced a security breach — and to be wary of any request to change account details.
