WBTV in North Carolina reported:
Companies are being targeted in a new phishing scam in which scammers are using fake emails to trick businesses into sharing information.
In one example from August 2024, a known cybercriminal posted their sale of “High Quality .gov emails for espionage/social engineering/data extortion, etc.,” which included U.S. credentials. T
“They learn about a company and they do the reconnaissance, you know, spy tactics,” O’Neill said. “They send requests posing as a government agency, saying that there is an investigation and we need you to respond with all of this documentation. It’s a way to steal intelligence information from a company by having them hand it right over to you.”
