New Scam Alert: Phishing Emails Exploit Anger Over ICE

PC Mag reported:

A hacker is impersonating email marketing firm SendGrid with a message that publicly supports Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The goal: Convince you to click a bogus opt-out button.

“As part of our commitment to supporting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), we will be adding a ‘Support ICE’ donation button to the footer of every email sent through our platform,” the phishing email says. “This button will appear automatically in all outgoing emails starting next week.”

The email then offers recipients a way to opt-out by clicking a button that supposedly forwards the user to Sendgrid’s account settings. However, Kohonen realized the email was fake since it came from an unofficial, possibly hacked web domain.

Key Takeaway:  Never "opt-out" or "unsubscribe" - mark unwanted email address as junk instead.
