New Scam Alert: Universities To Only Pay Verified Vendors After Preventing BEC

The Bismark Tribune reported:

Roughly $3.8 million from North Dakota State University and $1.3 million from Bismarck State College could have been stolen, totaling about $5.1 million.

Hagerott at a regularly scheduled Board of Higher Education meeting on Oct. 26 said the incident was due to human error and that “there were no machines that failed.”

The transaction was stopped before payment was processed and Hagerott said “it was probably due to immediate complaints by NDSU. As soon as they saw something didn't look right they hit the alert button.”

Payment only to verified vendors will continue until a detailed review of the fraudulent incident and its underlying causes is complete and until any changes that may be needed are made.
